Best Antioxidant



Blueberries, cranberries, red berries, purple berries-what are you saying? Yeah, there's something like a purple berry in there. You may not be so familiar with the word but recent research has shown that nothing compares to purple berries when it comes to finding the best antioxidant source.




A group of USDA scientists have come up with a study that indicates violet berries are even higher than blueberries and cranberries among the top fruits for the best antioxidants. Their early laboratory studies told them the elderberry, black currant, and chokeberry – collectively known as "purple berries" because of their dark color - In the best antioxidants, they are as many as 50 per cent higher than some of the more popular berry varieties. This also shows that purple berries are the best source of antioxidants and have the ability to have further health benefits, including improving the immune system, lowering cholesterol, and preventing the development of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer, and heart diseases.




Scientists expect in the near future that the best antioxidants from purple berries will play a greater role on the marketplace where they are ready to be used as part of an growing array of specialty health products, beverages and nutraceuticals.

There are also other abundant sources of the strongest antioxidants, in addition to purple berries. Artichokes and beans might not be at the top of your favorite food list, according to the largest USDA report yet, yet when it comes to best antioxidants these vegetables receive a coveted position. Such vegetables are among a growing variety of foods, according to the report, to contain remarkably high levels of the disease-fighting compounds known as the best antioxidants.

Researchers have also found, in addition to artichokes and beans, that Russet potatoes, pecans, and even cinnamon are all excellent sources of the best antioxidants, though lesser known.

Compared to previous research, this new analysis is more comprehensive and much more precise, possibly due to the updated technology. More than 100 different foods were used as researchers analyzed their levels of antioxidants, including fruits and vegetables, and spices and nuts.

Purple berries, cranberries, blueberries, and blackberries ranked highest among the fruits evaluated when it came to best sources of antioxidants. Only the top contenders among the vegetables tested were beans, artichokes, and Russet potatoes. Pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts also had strongest nut antioxidants.

But irrespective of which food source is a stronger source of antioxidants or which one is not, the bottom line remains the same: consume more fruit and vegetables. This was in Little Rock, Ark, according to Ronald L. Prior, Ph.D., a chemist and a nutritionist with the Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center in the USDA.
