Antioxidant Food

You are probably already familiar with foods which are antioxidant. If not your doctor, you have probably heard from your mom about them more than once. "Eat your vegetables. An apple a day ...... "A familiar sound?

Although it's very true that nothing is better than having fresh produce in your diet, there's also another explanation why doctors insist on a balanced diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. The response can lie in foods with antioxidants.

Antioxidant foodstuffs are strong free radical scavengers. Antioxidant foods have the purpose of hunting down and killing free radicals.

Which are those Free Radicals?

Free radicals are highly reactive chemical compounds, formed when the body undergoes the oxidation cycle. The reason free radicals are highly reactive is that they lack electrons, which makes them extremely unstable.

Thus, free radicals steal electrons from other molecules around them in order to gain maximum stability and thereby break the cell membranes and weaken the cell.

Free radicals create a "electron stealing" chain reaction because the minute they start stripping electrons from other molecules, those molecules themselves become free radicals. The effect is massive damage, leading to diseases such as Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease, cancer, senility and more.

How Antioxidant Foods Work:

Oxidation is a mechanism that happens naturally in the body and there really is no way for us to stop or prevent it. Just the simple act of breathing causes there to be oxidation. That being said, free radicals will still be present in our body, as by-products of oxidation.

But what if there's a way for us to delay free radical development? What if the free radical chain reaction breaks? What if there is a way to avoid the creation of certain diseases caused by dangerous free radicals?

Yeah, there really is a way. Antioxidant foods are active substances that can neutralize free radicals before destroying the cells in your body. This is the key reason why scientists continue to perform research on antioxidant foods and the benefits from them that the body will incur.

Antioxidant Foods: Which Foods are?

As described earlier, many vegetables and fruits are foods with high levels of antioxidants. Tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers – these are only a few of the many foods that are antioxidant out there. You should remember, however, that not all vegetables are high sources of antioxidants. Some vegetables or fruits, like other crops, can have a smaller number or concentration of antioxidants. White grapes for example do not have the same amount of antioxidant foods as the grapes used to produce red wine.
