The reason free radicals are extremely unstable is that they have an unpaired electron that they are attempting to reward by stealing an electron from a stable molecule. In fact, this sets off a chain reaction which can destroy the proteins and cell membranes of the body, weaken the natural defenses of the cell and disrupt the DNA of the cell. Such damage may lead to degenerative conditions, if sustained.

Luckily nature has given us a mechanism to help regulate free radicals. Antioxidants are the natural enemies of free radicals because breaking the chain reaction and killing free radicals is one of their functions.

And though antioxidants can be found in many fresh fruits and vegetables, taking antioxidant dietary supplements along with your food always costs. Maybe the most popular type of antioxidant available is vitamin C antioxidant dietary supplement. Bottles of this antioxidant dietary supplement, also known as ascorbic acid, can be sold in any pharmacy or natural food store. Evidence indicates that this specific type of dietary antioxidant supplement significantly helps improve the immune system and thus helps avoid the onset of degenerative diseases.

Another common type of dietary antioxidant supplement is vitamin E. This dietary antioxidant supplement works better when taken with vitamin C, as both vitamins tend to have synergistic effect when taken in combination.

Antioxidant dietary supplements can be in the form of botanicals, in addition to vitamins. Green tea is a rich source of epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), for example, flavonoid derivatives (polyphenols). They all contribute to what makes green tea a healthy dietary supplement for antioxidants.
